Welcome to SAWG: The Official San Antonio Writers' Guild Website

The San Antonio Writers' Guild is an organization for writers of all genres and all levels of experience. Our purpose is to share information with our fellow writers and help each other grow in our craft. Through contests, critiques, newsletters, our website, and our Facebook page, we seek to provide assistance and encouragement to writers of all skill levels. Come to a meeting for friendly, invaluable fellowship.

Monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month. Our next meeting will take place on Thursday, Sept 1, 2016, at Earl Abel's restaurant on Austin Highway. All are welcome to attend. We will begin assembling in the restaurant’s private room at 6pm for people to order food, and we will begin our General Meeting at our usual time of 7pm.

Our speaker this month will be JOHN PICACIO, one of the most acclaimed American artists in science fiction, fantasy, and horror publishing over the last decade. He illustrated the best-selling, Chesley Award-winning 2012 George R. R. Martin / A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE Calendar, and has created iconic cover art for books by Michael Moorcock, Harlan Ellison, Lauren Beukes, Mark Chadbourn, James Dashner, Robert Silverberg, Sheri Tepper, L.E. Modesitt, Jr., Dan Simmons, Joe R. Lansdale, Jeffrey Ford, Frederik Pohl, James Tiptree, Jr., and many more, as well as the STAR TREK and X-MEN franchises.

Winner of the 2012 and 2013 Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist, his accolades include seven Chesley Awards, two Locus Awards, two International Horror Guild Awards, and the World Fantasy Award.

He is the owner of Lone Boy, a media company housing his creator-owned art ventures, including Loteria – a bold new imagining of the classic Mexican bingo game, featuring new Picacio artworks.

Words that make him happy include comics, hardcover, Kenobi, Batman, arthouse, single malt, and ghost chili.

The meeting is free to attend, and all members and guests are welcome!

Critique Sessions

We also hold critique sessions most Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. You may bring any genre. We have a wide range of interests. We discuss plot, pacing, dialogue, etc. We do not point out grammatical errors or punctuation problems, but we do note those on the pages presented for critique.

The Wednesday workshops are held at various locations and times, including Barnes & Noble, Fuddruckers, The Lion and The Rose, La Taza, and La Madeleine. Please check our Facebook page for details.

If you have never attended one of these sessions, come and observe the first time and ask that your name be added to the list of those wishing to be read.

*Please note that anyone can attend these sessions, but you must be a paid-up member of SAWG to have your work read.

Saturday critiques are held from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. at Geeks Cafe, 5460 Babcock Road.

Come at 1:00 if you wish to have lunch. The critique session starts at 2:30. Feel free to join us. Please do not bring outside food or drink into the restaurant.
